Therapy

Reframe + Insight + Practice = Transformation

I believe that that one of the most important things I can do as a therapist is to help create an emotionally safe and open environment where you feel free to be yourself. After all, I believe that any struggle we choose to address is an opportunity to reframe it as an opportunity for growth. And in reframing it, it is my hope to help lead you to some powerful insight about your life. But then I want to help you take that insight and put it into practice, because insight is rarely enough to lead to change. But when you reframe things, learn insight and practice it, then you have transformation.

Step One

What Can I Help You With?

I work with Individuals (men and women/14 and up), Couples, Families, and Organizations. I also offer running or walking sessions, as well as video or phone sessions (please let my assistant Meagan, or I know if any of these interest you).

Though people come to me with a variety of struggles that I help them work through, my areas of specialty are Relationships, Boundaries and Intimacy (dating, marriage, family, organizations), Anxiety and DepressionFaith and SpiritualityGrief and Loss, and Self-Care and Wellness.

What you can gain in working with me:

  • Identify the connection between your underlying emotions (root issues) and negative actions.
  • Identify the  connection between your truth/true self and positive actions.
  • Reframe your struggles as an opportunity for growth. How do these struggles help inform you of what you need to pay attention to?
  • Create exercises that help you foster awareness and put into practice the insight you have gained, in order to create more permanent change.
  • Provide you with tools that will help you practice, manage, and actively work through your struggles.
  • Develop an applicable plan for ongoing growth in your life.
  • A focus on attachment, emotional regulation, mindfulness and skills practice.

We have referred people to Rhett Smith for several years now. We know that we will get compassionate, educated and experienced counsel for our people. It’s been great to hear so many people talk about the change that has come to their lives as they deal with their pain in an easy to understand and an easy to implement plan of help and care. Personally, Rhett has meant the world to me and has been a massive part of my journey to health and wholeness. With the greatest confidence, I believe Rhett too can be a great resource in your journey to be the kind of person you want to be as you relate to yourself and to the world in which you interact.

RUNNING (OR WALKING) THERAPY

“What it means is that you have the power to change your brain. All you have to do is lace up your running shoes.”

Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain

I love to run and running is my own personal therapy.

I have run my entire life. Always for fun, whether it was in grade school field day, running for sports in high school, or the enjoyment I have found over the last 13 years racing everything from 5K’s to 50 mile races.

I believe that running can change your life, and the science is there to prove that this is true. So whether you would like to start running, or walking, I know that physical movement during therapy tends to enhance one’s insight, creativity and hope.

If you are interested in moving your therapy sessions outdoors for a walk or a run, I welcome all levels of people, from those who have barely gotten off the couch, to those who are completing 100 mile ultra races.

Also stay tuned for running therapy groups starting in the Fall of 2019. If you are interested, please let my assistant Meagan or I know.

“exercise is as effective as certain medications for treating anxiety and depression.”

VIDEO OR PHONE SESSIONS

If you desire to conduct your sessions via video or phone, please let me know. Often people prefer these sessions to in person because it allows them more flexibility in their day to day schedule, as well as when they are traveling.

Step Three

Fill Out Paperwork

All paperwork needs to be done 24 hours in advance of your first session. Paperwork is done online through the HIPPA secure documents at Simple Practice. My assistant Meagan will set you up in our program and email you the link to fill out all our paperwork. If you prefer paper intake forms, please let Meagan know and she can email you the forms.
