'Search for Significance' by Robert McGee. It's great because it is written from both a spiritual and a clinical perspective. It breaks things down this way:

False Beliefs (4 of them)
Consequences of false beliefs
God's specific solution
Results of God's solution

Great stuff for anybody who feels their significance is measured by anybody or anything other than God.

Marcus,

I actually read The Writing Life on the plane to the Christian Web Conference last month....I loved it. Dillard is an amazing writer of course.

But I haven't read The Things They Carried, but will now on your recommendation. Thanks for sharing that.

Rhett

Best thing: Instead of feeling like you have to "balance" your life between all of the things you have to do, figure out the things that you really enjoy and intentionally "unbalance" your life towards those things because those are your strengths. I read Julia Child's memoir right after reading this book and it reinforced a lot of the same ideas-it was very interesting. I am definitely blessed to have the family support that I have to let me go on the solo vacation-it was freaking fabulous!

For writers (like you Rhett!) I would add The Writing Life by Annie Dillard.

And, for everyone, I would add The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien. Which is odd because the book is fiction. But very important.

My friend RO Smith (@rosmith) just sent me a direct message on Twitter to remind me how great a book The Contemplative Pastor: Returning to the Art of Spiritual Direction by Eugene Peterson is.
http://www.amazon.com/Contemplative-Pastor-Returning-Spiritual-Direction/dp/0802801145

So true...that book single-handedly changed my view of what a pastor is.

Thanks RO.

Terri,

That is so good to know. My wife and I were talking about that book the other night after I was reading about it at Michael Hyatt's blog. She was really interested in it.

Solo vacation....very nice.

So what was the best thing about that book? What specifically did you glean from it that stands out from everything else?

I just just returned from taking a solo vacation to help me work through some emotions, issues, and stress from this year and to get in a better place mentally and emotionally to be there for my family. A book that I read that I found helpful was Find Your Strongest Life by Marcus Buckingham-very good for women (especially moms) who are feeling stressed about trying to have it all or finding balance in their lives.
