Sue,

Totally understand what you are saying. And knowing you and John, this journey of yours corresponds with what you are saying. The city has a lot to offer...especially the creative types. I know that wherever you and John live, you will definitely help bring transformation and creativity to that community.

okay, here comes a long comment!

we've had a lot of change in our life in the last year--moving from tx to ga, new job (for single income family) selling a home right after the economy tanked, starting to form our vision for missional community, etc. the one thing we decided from the get go was "get out of debt." towards that end, we shed whatever we could live without before leaving tx and found a condo to rent within 5 miles of new office so that we could easily maintain 1 car sharing. having bent our every effort into getting out of debt, God really came along side us and brought in unexpected income (some gifts, some through side jobs) and we killed our debt in less than half the projected time!

now we sit trying to decide how much house we can afford and when to buy. the "where" was the only easy part: we are ready to be out of the burbs. our decision wasn't based so much on disdain for suburban living (b/c you are right, we've had good childhoods), but b/c we have begun to figure out the type of people we are drawn to, and they are mainly in the city (i will say here that we've had a lot of weird reactions from ministry suburbanites. lots of shock, not much benefit of the doubt).

in theory we christians should be reaching out to everyone and anyone for the sake of the gospel, right? but lets be real..this is often not the case. at least it wasn't for us. so, we made the decision to test out a new theory for our next 'hood: if we live around people that we have an easier time connecting with (similar interests/passions), we have a greater chance of building deeper and more meaningful relationships with them. the thought of being a part of a young, vibrant artistic community in the city excites us...not so much the brand new developments where we could get twice as much as for the value.

any who, i think i'll save the rest for another post/another day (so ridiculously long, anyways!) who knows what will develop as we search for our new home..

Hey man,

We've been living in Aubrey (380 corridor north of Frisco, etc.) for 6 years—a suburb of the suburbs you might say. Part of it is that the church where I serve is here, but we've found all the issues you've mentioned to be true.

It's really sort of like having the best of everything. The pace of life here is slow and quiet, but the growth and opportunity for ministry is unlimited. Plus, with the Dallas North Tollway completed, we can be at House of Blues in 45 minutes.

Can't beat that.
