Hey Rhett,

Having been a fairly intense volunteer (15+ hrs/week) at my church for several years now I totally appreciate your thoughts... especially as I come to the close of my first month on staff. :)

I come from the world of self-employment & hourly billing where time = money = providing for my family/sanity, so I'm definitely used to more structured meetings than I'm finding are standard to certain systems in this organization. Don't get me wrong, the staff have great intentions - just an occasional lack of conscious awareness to the time issue.

I've got a fairly large volunteer meeting coming up, and I'm planning to display a massive countdown timer (to the scheduled end time of the meeting) on one of the screens in the room. My hope is that this will relieve some stress as well as create a sense of urgency surrounding our time.

Keep up the good work.

Good advice Rhett. As a presbyterian it is a somewhat questionable way of doing things [that's my story] but I've used email to our Session to get the group thought about an issue or to even take a vote. Then we record the decision at the next regularly scheduled meeting.

About group emails. I remind people to "reply to all" and I often put a time when I have to have answers. I call them, if I haven't heard anything, at least 12 hours prior so they have the ability to check the discussion.

I've also found Google documents good for roughing a paper out together as well.
