I think it makes perfect sense. I believe you are right in that it is how we express ourselves (in either plane) that is important. I always hear social media consultants refer to it as authenticity. Through that authenticity with others we inspire some of the aforementioned offline actions.

Did I confuse your thoughts too much?

I think social media has many values that are all great. One of the greatest is using online connections to inspire offline action. Whether that action is meeting face to face or just serving in your passion. I don't know that the relationships need to exist in both "planes" of community, but I do think the scope of how you express yourself needs to be in both of those planes. Does that make sense?

One of my most painful youth ministry experiences as a youth director was constantly being left out by the "ordained" pastors.

Thanks for playing this uber-dorky meme ;-) Cynical no. Realistic, surely.

I have added your post the growing list of folks who have already played.

Rhett -- Actually, Bruce Reyes Chow started this meme, so I can't take credit (as much as I'd like to).

For a good laugh, check out the psych eval I had to do in my presbytery just to be allowed the privilege to *inquire* about becoming ordained!

Seriously, though, I think you're right about the division the ordination process causes. I'd take it a step further and say that it not only divides clergy from staff, but more importantly clergy from congregation. And this coming from a denomination that has its roots in the "Priesthood of all Believers."

I have to remind myself that sometimes new birth comes about through death. As the PC(USA) continues to die, I see patches of beautiful green emerge from it -- obviously to me, presbymergent is one of those. And I think Bruce and his stand for moderator this year is another. I don't know if it will be enough, and I know that (sadly) we'll continue to piss off and lose bright, talented people like you. But I hope that at the end of the day, those who leave and those who stay can all still work together for the Kingdom.

Thanks for playing! Hope I didn't stir up too many bad vibes ;-)
